Low-noise synthesis of microwave and millimetre-wave signals with optical frequency comb generator

چکیده
The phase noise of a 20 GHz picosecond optical pulse train generated by a modulator-based optical frequency comb generator is analysed. The residual timing jitter is 10 fs for Fourier frequencies from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. Photodetection of the optical pulse train provides millimetre-wave signals with similarly low residual jitter at 40, 60, and 80 GHz with applicable powers of 27.5, 210.5, and 213 dBm, respectively.

Ultralow-phase-noise millimetre-wave signal generator assisted with an electro-optics-modulator-based optical frequency comb
Low-noise millimetre-wave signals are valuable for digital sampling systems, arbitrary waveform generation for ultra-wideband communications, and coherent radar systems. However, the phase noise of widely used conventional signal generators (SGs) will increase as the millimetre-wave frequency increases. Our goal has been to improve commercially available SGs so that they provide a low-phase-noi...
متن کاملDesign and Control of Femtosecond Lasers for Optical Clocks and the Synthesis of Low-Noise Optical and Microwave Signals
This paper describes recent advances in the design and control of femtosecond laser combs for their use in optical clocks and in the synthesis of low-noise microwave and optical signals. The authors present a compact and technically simple femtosecond laser that directly emits a broad continuum and shows that it can operate continuously on the timescale of days as the phase-coherent “clockwork”...
متن کاملLow Instability, Low Phase-noise Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Microwave Synthesizer
The ability of a frequency comb from a femtosecond mode-locked laser to faithfully reproduce the properties of optical oscillators at microwave frequencies is examined. The fractional frequency instability of the femtosecond comb microwave synthesizer is 2 x 10/τ, and could improve by at least a factor of 10 upon elimination of excess photodetection noise. Phase-noise levels are also examined. ...

There has been increased interest in the use and manipulation of optical fields to address the challenging problems that have traditionally been approached with microwave electronics. Some examples that benefit from the low transmission loss, agile modulation and large bandwidths accessible with coherent optical systems include signal distribution, arbitrary waveform generation and novel imagin...
متن کاملOn the phase noise performance of microwave and millimeter-wave signals generated with versatile Kerr optical frequency combs.
We investigate the phase noise performance of micro- and millimeter-wave signals generated using a ultra-high Q whispering gallery mode disk-resonator with Kerr nonlinearity. Our study focuses on the stability of the optical spectra and on the performances of the corresponding microwave and millimeter-wave beat notes in terms of power and phase noise. The blue slope of an optical mode of the re...
